Returning to the Common Cup

Four years ago, the pandemic changed our world and the Church in so many ways. We had to adapt to the circumstances of the situation. One such adaptation was the common cup. The adaptation was not to be the new normal, but a temporary solution which permission was given by our bishop. With the support of the Vestry, it is now time to return to the common cup which is the early church’s practice and traditional Episcopal way of receiving the Blood of Christ. For many, this will be a positive sign of returning back to normal, to others there might be hesitancy. The use of the common cup is a symbol of our unity in Christ through the sacrament of the Eucharist. If you feel you are unable to receive through the Blood of Christ through the chalice, please know the Church has always taught you receive the fullness of the Sacrament in just one element. The clergy always consume the remainder of the chalice after everyone receives the Eucharist. In the many decades of our ministry, please know Deacon Dennis and I have never been ill from drinking the chalice. We will return to the practice of the common cup as we enter Holy Week on Palm Sunday, March 23. If you have any questions or concerns, please talk to Fr. Michael.
