Memorial Day

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”*

If you are unfamiliar with Delaware County, or new to the area all together, you may not be aware of the “Spirit of America Park”, situated on Felton Street and West Sellers Avenue in Ridley Park, PA.

In 2018, a local Boy Scout who was very young at the time the horrific 9/11 attack occurred, was prompted by his mother’s account of what had happened, and the desire to reach Eagle Scout status, worked with many Delaware County business owners and our town Mayor to refurbish and erect a beautiful 9/11 – Flight 93 Memorial.

I was in attendance the September day it was unveiled, and couldn’t help noticing how elated and proud his mother was of him.

If you are interested, I’m sure you can find out more about it by researching the archived articles in our local Town Talk newspaper. Or, perhaps taking a walk, sitting on one of the benches there, eating lunch and or spending some time in reflection.

While this memorial is particularly dedicated to those who lost their lives on 9/11, (honoring the hero’s of Flight 93 in Schwenksville, PA) nonetheless, it’s a memorial for all who have left their earthly home.

I’m reminded of Jesus’ words in John 15:12-13. Since he willingly gave his life for us, Memorial Day can also be a way to glorify and honor him.

So amid all the barbecues and picnics we might attend, let’s pause and remember what Jesus has accomplished. And while doing that also give thanks for all who have laid down their lives to allow us to continue to live ours.
