Easter Vigil
April 16, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Come light the holy fire ourdoors on the Christ Church lawn. This service takes place outdoors, so please dress accordingly and bring a lawn chair.
The service will relocate to inside if needed due to weahter. We also have a handful of lawn chairs avilable for those who do not have one.
Vigil, at its most simple, is about gathering as the sun fades. It is telling stories about the origin of fire with the One who created all things, and it is celebrating the gift of fire which transforms, refines, warms, and enlightens – just as Christ and the Spirit do. It is a rhythm of ancient epics of lostness and foundness, until you find yourself in the lost and found story that changed everything – Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. Then we share the food we have brought with us (possibly transformed with the physics of fire).
The Easter Vigil is an ancient tradition that has been revived in recent years. What we began last year will continue, more of a friendly ‘camp-style’ than elaborate liturgical art, gathering entirely outside (unless it rains) on the front lawn. Bring your comfy lawn chair and the jacket you need. Bring a friend and a sense of wonder. Bring the children to set forth the holy meaning of Easter before the little bunny foo foo sugar fest. In the ancient world, the new day began when the sun had set, so we begin at sunset. We will need some volunteer hands and hearts for the following:
- Outdoor musicians: Do you have experience with guitar or leading people in music?
- Set-up and take down of speaker system, fire pit, and altar etc.
- Readers and storytellers – it adds to the delight when groups of people creatively share the sacred stories. We can help you figure out what and how!
