Open Hearts: Advent Sanctuary Art Project
In the direct mailing, you will find several Advent-colored hearts. These are for you to decorate, or write on, or draw on with your response to the following: each day and week of Advent invites us to open our hearts more and more to God’s redeeming grace. In her book Learning to Walk in the Dark, Episcopal priest Barbara Brown Taylor writes: “…new life starts in the dark. Whether it is a seed in the ground, a baby in the womb, or Jesus in the tomb, it starts in the dark.” Advent is the directive to begin again: What in your life and our world is in need of God’s fresh mercy, grace, love, and peace?
If you have more hearts than household members, imagine yourself in the place of someone for whom life is desperate. What would their response be?
If you have more to offer than hearts in your envelope, (or didn’t get a physical mailing, trace and cut out your own hearts, just be sure they are in the Advent blues, pinks, whites, and even a tiny bit of purple. Please return these hearts before Thanksgiving!
