Groups!

During the middle of the shutdown, I found connection online through fan groups. For example one of fans of my favorite musician (Josh Ritter) and one of my favorite TV shows (the West Wing). These were a source of community and laughter and insight across millions of miles and at a time when I was feeling particularly isolated as a solo person. In recent survey data, most people who would say that they are an intentional Christian say they would like for the church to help them connect with a group that focuses on important causes and concerns.

This suggests to me that one of the avenues for becoming more porous to the community is to begin a group or two. Like those online fan groups, if you are interested deeply in a lifegiving activity or concern, chances are that someone else is too. What group would be a blessing to your life, or the life of someone you know? Young Parents, Board Games, Environmental Care reading club, Grown-Up Scouts, Jazz appreciation, Healthier Cooking, Pflag, Solo in the Burbs, Veterans… What group could you work with the staff to begin? I challenge all of CCRP to start three groups that connect to the neighborhood this year.
